6 historic hotels from Slovakia were nominated to compete in the “Historic Hotels of Europe Award“ and more than 100-year-old Grand hotels succeeded against intense European competition. Hotel guests from all around the world and fans were voting on the website of the Historic Hotels of Europe in 10 categories.

“We are very happy that Slovakia became the leader as for the number of nominations for the Historic Hotels of Europe award this year. And it is great that we have succeeded to turn the nominations of the Slovak hotels Grandhotel Praha, Grandhotel Starý Smokovec, Hotel Hviezdoslav, Chateau Belá, Villa Nečas and Chateau Gbeľany to awards. It proves that the quality of services in Slovakia is comparable with the European standard and our hotels have found satisfied customers all around Europe,” commented Ján Svoboda, the president of the association of the Historical Hotels of Slovakia.

Grandhotel**** Starý Smokovec has made success among European historic hotels for the first time and won the 2nd place in the category of The best historic hotel with a story . “It has been more than 110 years that our Grandhotel has been writing its story. Thousands of people have become part of it in the course of time – not only guests but also employees and my colleagues. This award is the result of their everyday work in the first place. We are very proud to have been awarded in the category with the best story because it is mainly people, their experiences and emotions that create the spirit of our hotel and every time they visit us, they leave an unmistakable mark here,“ said Božena Fábryová, the general manager of Grandhotel**** in Starý Smokovec.

Grandhotel Praha**** in Tatranská Lomnica was awarded as the 3rd best historic SPA hotel last year, this year the votes put it to the 2nd place. “Being among the elite of the historic hotel industry means a lot to us. When working we are always absolutely determined and do our best to make our guests feel like at home,to offer them flawless peace so that they forget all everyday troubles. We are very happy that our guests have shown again they like our historic legend of the Tatras whose elegance will be emphasised by tens of new Classic rooms this winter. This award but mainly the smile of satisfied clients is the best award for us. That is what our work is about. Thank you!” said Ondrej Pelán, the general manager of Grandhotel Praha**** in Tatranská Lomnica.

The non-profit organisation of the Historic Hotels of Europe, which is based in Paris, is an association of the most prestigious hotels in Europe that offer high-quality and authentic experiences on a high level. It aims to promote cultural values and traditions of individual nations through a variety of historic buildings – castles, mansions, large farms and town houses which guarantee unforgettable moments. The motto of the awards is to reward the efforts of all hotel employees who care for the comfort of their guests as well as to keep a high standard of quality, support history and present unique European jewels. “We do not represent ordinary hotels. These are the historic hotels of Europe. We offer services of a higher standard, form our values, we are the guardians of the past and that is what we have in common. We celebrate the history and culture of Europe and the excellent character of our hotels,” announced Barbara Avdis, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Historic Hotels of Europe during the last festive weekend.

Grandhotel Praha**** – from the very beginning of its history, it has been sought-after because of its noble character, unique location under Mt. Lomnický štít and beautiful mountain environment that had beneficial healing effects. These benefits and the return to the spa tradition of the Tatras are represented by the main hotel jewel – the unique Grand Moutain Spa, which offer maximum wellness luxury. The only outdoor pool in the High Tatras, a summer mountain beach, whirlpools, a big sauna world and pools are ready to guarantee flawless relaxation. Thanks to a unique concept of healing powers of Tatra nature – mountain herbs, forest fruits, typical conifers, honey and underground treasures such as salt and precious stones, hotel guests can feel the healing Tatra magic literally on their own skin.

Grandhotel**** Starý Smokovec – the story of the historic Grandhotel began in 1904, when it was built as one of three big prestigious hotels in the Tatras, and is related to many eminent guests that have visited the hotel in the course of time. The former holiday residence of aristocrats was honoured to be able to welcome the Saxon crown prince Friedrich August, the former Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš, and even Fidel Castro himself, who enjoyed a table tennis match with the hotel boiler attendant at that time. Emil Zátopek, a four-time Olympic champion went down in the hotel history. He caused a stir when he ate all refreshment that was prepared for Vietnamese guests but made up for it with a big basket of king bolete mushrooms that he brought from the valley of Veľká Studená dolina where he trained. The hotel chef used them to make a delicate soup for the whole hotel. The age-long history of Grandhotel is still alive – not only in the form of the titles of historical hotel premises that were named after well-known personalities but also thanks to Austro-Hungarian gastronomy, spa wellness services and last but not least, hard work of the whole hotel team.
