“The haulage rope is stretched when operating and this natural process is noticeable especially in the first years. Most cable cars have approx. 3.4 – 4km –long ropes which are usually shortened by 4 metres. As the Funitel cable car hangs on two 9km-long ropes, the haulage rope must be shortened by 8 metres in the third year of operation. We assume the rope will not get stretched after being shortened and will hold for next 6-10 years,” said Ján Štetka, the director of cableways in the resort of Jasná.

Shortening of ropes is one of many technological components of cableways which require regular technological maintenance. A detailed manual on operation, maintenance and tests of cableways describes what needs to be done to keep the cable cars and chairlifts in an excellent technical condition, what needs to be oiled and when, what needs to be replaced, set, measured etc. As part of regular technical maintenance, the track, engine room and motors are serviced, oil in gear boxes is replaced and other prescribed procedures are done.

Regular autumn technical maintenance is performed under Mt. Chopok on working days from 19th October to 27th November. Cable cars and chairlifts on the northern and southern side operate at weekend every half an hour. For latest information, please follow www.jasna.sk. Technical cableway maintenance in the High Tatras begins in the resort of Tatranská Lomnica from 9th to 13th November and continues from 18th November to 4th December. The resort of Štrbské Pleso will have the technical maintenance completed from 2nd to 13th November and from 18th to 20th November, the funicular of Starý Smokovec –Hrebienok from 26th to 30th October, from 2nd to 6th November and from 9th to 11th November. Permanent winter operation of the Hrebienok funicular begins on 12th November. For latest information about the operation of cableways in the High Tatras, please click HERE.
