47.5 tonnes of ice brought from the Polish town of Wroclaw and 400 m3 of snow are being changed to a unique piece of art that shall resemble the era of antique gods. 360 ice blocks, weighing 125 kg each, are used to build the antique temple, its columns and roof. 5 sculptors and 5 helpers began to work on the masterpiece last week and the construction process should take 8 – 10 days. The temple is going to be officially opened on Saturday 24th January with the participation of the “Spartan Race“ founder – Joe De Sena from America, who is considered the icon of the race. “The construction works are proceeding well. We have never made such a giant piece of art before although we have experience in building ice sculptures in the area of Hrebienok in the High Tatras. Ice is sensitive to warm temperatures and the weather is giving us a hard time to a certain degree. However, we hope the days will get colder again and we will be able to finish the piece in time. When deciding to build an antique temple, we were inspired by ancient Greek and Roman mythology. There will be 5 main and 6 side Ionic columns on the construction, 4 sculptures of Spartan warriors with shields and spears in the interior, the temple will reach up to 5.5 metres in height and 11×11 metres in the overall size,“ said Adam Bakoš, the leader of the sculptor´s team that are working on the temple of ice in Jasná.
This will be the first time that the Winter Spartan Sprint is held in Central Europe in such winter conditions. The difficult obstacle course is at least 5 km long, contains various sophisticated artificial and natural obstacles (min. 15) and is considered “the toughest running race in the world”. Once the race is completed, the temple of ice in Jasná will be available for visitors until the end of the winter season. It will be lit in the evening and will help to create a beautiful atmosphere in the resort. Besides the masterpiece of ice, there is much more prepared for visitors who come to the resort of Jasná – a Fun arena with sledging, snow fun tools, night skiing or shopping combined with wine tasting in the Vist Shop.
