“The winter of 2012/13 was very specific as for investments. We are happy to say that skiers accepted the improved transport to Mt. Chopok positively, appreciating the connection of the northern and southern slope by new a funitel, twinliner and a 15-person gondola cable car. Holidays in the region of Liptov were given a new dimension with skiers enjoying a real winter at Jasná and a real Caribbean climate of 30 degrees after skiing at the Tropical Paradise of Tatralandia. A revolution of transport to Mt. Chopok, snowmaking up to the summit, new investments in the aquapark, hotel packages, investments in the wellness&spa of the FIS Hotel at Štrbské Pleso, the largest aprés-ski bar at Tatranská Lomnica, new Tatry Motion shops, the TATRYPASS loyalty system, various marketing activities – all this was crucial success of this winter for us. Intensive cooperation with regional organisations (Regional Organisation of Tourism) has proved the significance and potential of a destination management and enabled us to organise various successful and top events in the whole Tatra region. I believe that with common events aiming to revive Slovak tourism and help the region increase the employment rate we have taken a step in the right direction,“ evaluated Bohuš Hlavatý, Chairman of the Board of the Tatry mountain resorts, a.s, (TMR) company.

The ski season in the Tatras started on 8th December 2012, with help of artificial snowmaking. The snowmaking lasted 72 days at Tatranská Lomnica, 35 days at Štrbské Pleso, 88 days at Chopok North and 46 days at Chopok South. It started to snow heavily in mid January and so the skiers could enjoy the highest located and steepest slope in Slovakia – Lomnické sedlo at the resort of Tatranská Lomnica at the end of January (30.1.2013). The Low Tatras had above-average snow fall and snow cover since February when compared to other mountain ranges. April was rich in natural snow as well. Visitors coming to the Tatras included domestic skiers mainly, then our neighbours from Poland, the Czech Republic and a considerable number of Ukrainian clients.

The resort of Štrbské Pleso saw a similar turnout to the previous year. The resort of Tatranská Lomnica recorded a percentage increase, with 6.4% more skiers coming to the area. New investments increased the turnout on the northern side of Mt. Chopok by 22%, the southern side of Mt. Chopok welcomed 40% more visitors in this season. However, the weather was
not really on the side of skiers. Statisticians recorded 51 sunny and 56 cloudy days at resorts (compared to 17 cloudy days in the previous year). Despite bad weather conditions skiers could ski on 45 km of ski slopes at the resort of Jasná and 22 km of groomed slopes in the High Tatras. Other 50 km of tracks were used by cross-country skiers for freestyle or classic style in the High Tatras.
