Social responsibility related to the environment is one of significant priorities in the water park of Tatralandia and has been reflected in several ecological targets and waste reuse programmes. The modern water park, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of people per year, has decided to cut down the amount of disposable plastic products in the field of gastronomy where plastic had been used when serving meals and drinks as a hygiene standard for many years. “Disposable plastic dishes were replaced by biodegradable, environmentally-friendly ones at the beginning of the year already. More than 150,000 of plastic plates and cutlery sets were replaced by products that won´t harm the environment that much. Another step meant to reduce the amount of plastic waste has been a clear NO to disposable plastic cups. As glass cannot be used near pools due to safety and health protection reasons, the water park had to choose returnable plastic ones that can be washed. In order to reduce the amount of plastic bottles, i.e. plastic waste even more, drinks will be sold at self-service machines from next year,” explained Michal Mazalán, the F&B manager at Tatralandia.

Last but not least, the water park has stopped using plastic straws and has replaced them with ecological biodegradable versions made of fruit stones. This has been a crucial step as about 250,000 of straws had been used per year before. To understand the amount better, imagine that by joining all of the straws together, the line would be as long as about 50 kilometres, which is almost the linear distance between Tatralandia and Banská Bystrica.

After the self-service draught machines are installed, the amount of plastic waste in Tatralandia should decrease by about 80%!

Water park clients can also help separate the waste and support recycling. The complex ecological programme in the park includes also waste bins for individual kinds of waste. Adopting the mentioned measures means that Tatralandia continues with the commenced trend of sustainable management which proves the interest in protecting the environment and nature. Among other things, it covers using thermal energy for heating water and the water park area (and saves about 4,000 tonnes of coal per year), ecological chemical-free water cleaning, reusing of bio waste left after grass mowing and weeding as fertiliser, and a charging station for fans of electric vehicles.
