The ski slope, which leads from Lomnické sedlo to Skalnaté Pleso and continues further in the form of red slopes from Skalnaté Pleso to Tatranská Lomnica, has a total length of 5.5 km, a vertical drop of 1,300 metres and is the steepest slope in the Tatras. The beginning of the skiing season on the piste of Lomnické sedlo, which has an average incline of 46.91%, depends on weather conditions as it uses natural snow only. Currently, there is about 100 cm of natural snow in the saddle. Opening of the slope is scheduled for Friday 16th January 2015 unless the conditions change dramatically. The black slope of Lomnické sedlo has a vertical drop of 439 metres. It is groomed every day, probed for avalanche danger and monitored by the Mountain Rescue Service, which decides whether it can be opened or shall be closed due to high risk. Experienced skiers love the so called French mogul, which is located in the south-eastern part of the saddle and offers another possibility how to ski it down. It is located in the south-eastern section. This rather difficult freeride trail is 1,380 metres long and has a vertical drop of 408 metres. Currently, there is about 150 cm of natural snow in the mogul.
Due to various snow conditions, the slope of Lomnické sedlo was opened on the following days in previous years: 22/3/2014; 30/1/2013; 20/1/2012; 30/1/2011; 14/2/2010 and 2/1/2009.
Lomnické sedlo is the last part of the resort in Tatranská Lomnica to be opened, i.e. there will be 12 km of trails available from Saturday in total. The average snow cover on the slopes reaches 60-80 cm and skiing conditions are very good. The resort of Štrbské Pleso has 75 cm of snow, all types of trails for demanding but also less experienced skiers are opened. There is 65 cm of snow in Starý Smokovec, which offers 2 trails of Jakubkove lúky. Day sledging from Hrebienok down to Starý Smokovec is available every day and night sledging 3 times a week. The longest (2.5 km) sledging trail has 40 cm of snow, the conditions for sledging are very good. For more information, please visit www.vt.sk
