The traditional event took place at the foot of Mt Chopok when the summit was still covered with a sizeable layer of snow. That is why the volunteers and the mountain resort staff focused mainly on lower altitudes.
“On Friday, we managed to plant almost 700 dwarf mountain pine and tree seedlings, mainly pines, larches and spruces. In addition to planting, we also replanted bigger trees that grew in the areas of present-day lakes. New locations were found for them,” explained Jiří Trumpeš, the resort manager.
2,400 trees had been planted in the area of Zadná voda by the Ploštín Land Community before. Among other things, the Green Chopok participants helped with preventive anti- erosion treatments under professional supervision of experts, sowed grass and covered the sown areas with hay to create as good conditions for the grass to grow as possible.
A part of the volunteers collected rubbish on the southern side between Krupová and Kosodrevina. In the north, there were several groups that cleared the areas between Biela púť and Priehyba, around Vrbické pleso (tarn), along the Otupnianka brook and a few smaller streams. More than 50 sacks of rubbish were collected during the Green Chopok event. It was mainly cans, bottles, forgotten or lost winter accessories but also construction waste.
“We value each and every volunteer who comes to Jasná not only to ski or hike but also to help if needed – with cleaning after winter, planting trees, sowing grass. And to thank them, every volunteer was offered a tasty lunch and given an original face mask and a 1-day ski pass for the 21/22 winter season as a present,” added Jiří Trumpeš.
The event was organised in cooperation with the Región Liptov regional tourism organisation, which co-financed it also with a grant of the Ministry of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic.
