The Mölltaler Gletscher ski resort in Austria has created record-breaking snow depots to make the preparations for the start of the new ski season easier and faster.

At the end of the 2024/25 ski season, the resort gathered the remaining snow into large snow depots. “We managed to store approximately 300,000 m³ of snow, which is a record-breaking amount. Compared to the previous season, the depot is 100,000 m³ larger, and compared to the 2023/24 season, we’ve stored six times more snow,” revealed resort general manager Petr Nikl. In practice, this is enough snow to fill 120 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Before storing the snow, the resort tested several types of fleece covers at Mölltal to protect the depots. The goal was to select those with the best thermal insulation properties suitable for the specific requirements of successful snow preservation.

The snow depots are expected to preserve the snow for just under four months – from 8th June, when the ski season ended, to 10th October, when the start of the 2025/26 ski season is planned at Mölltal. The stored snow will expedite piste preparation and help reduce the costs associated with launching the new ski season.

Mölltaler Gletscher is the only glacier ski resort in the Austrian region of Carinthia. It offers the longest ski season of all resorts in the TMR portfolio. Thanks to its excellent conditions, it is a popular training ground for ski clubs and national teams. As in other TMR resorts, skiing costs less with the Gopass SKI Season Pass, which is available at gopass.travel.
